Invent a Creature
Mix two animals into a brand new creature: draw its head, body and legs, then name it.
A tall frame in two or three bands, head on top, body in the middle, legs at the bottom, with the animal each part comes from printed beside it. Little ticks across the joins show where the parts meet, so they line up as one creature. The two animals come from the picture theme. Readers then write its name, where it lives and what it eats; non-readers draw where it lives and what it eats in two picture-marked boxes.
