Tracing & Writing

Word Tracing

Whole words to trace and then copy: a name, a spelling list, the days of the week.

Each word gets its own block: one solid copy to look at, dotted copies to trace across the line, then empty rule underneath to write it from memory. Type any list — a child's name, this week's spellings, the days of the week — or load one of the presets; leave it empty and the words are the names of the pictures, in the book's language. Or take words from a word bank, or from the picture library by sound: every picture whose name starts with p, has the syllable pa, or contains lh. Words are printed exactly as typed unless you ask for a case, so a name keeps its capital. Write in print, in the school cursive of the book's language, or in capitals. Only as many words as will fit at a sensible line height are printed, so a long list makes a page a child can still write on rather than a page of hairlines.
