Matching & Sorting

Odd One Out

Rows of pictures with one that does not belong. Sort by kind, by rhyme, by size or by which way it faces.

Each row holds one picture that does not fit, and the child circles it. Sorting by kind builds the rows from the picture library's own categories and tags — four birds and a bus — so the reason one picture is the odd one out is a fact a child can say out loud. Sorting by size or by turn is pure looking: the same picture repeated with one of them larger, or tipped on its side. Turned rows only ever use pictures that visibly change when they are turned, so a row of balls can never end up with two right answers. Rhyming rows are a listening puzzle: all the names but one rhyme, in the book's language.
