Sum Search
A grid of digits: ring every run of numbers next to each other that hits the target.
A word search for arithmetic. The child hunts through a grid of single digits for runs of numbers side by side that add up to the target, and rings each one. Because there is no word to recognise the only way through is to add, over and over, which is exactly the practice it is for. Longer runs, a bigger target and diagonals in play each make it harder in a different way. The filler digits are picked so they do not quietly make the target themselves, so the number of rings the page asks for is the number that are really there.
