Missing Number
Sums with a box where a number should be: 7 + ☐ = 12, ☐ − 4 = 9, 3 × ☐ = 15.
Each line is a true sum with one number taken out and a box left in its place. Choose whether the gap is the first number, the second number or the answer, or let it move about. Putting the gap at the front is the useful one: it stops a child reading the equals sign as 'write the answer here' and makes them treat it as 'the same amount as', which is the idea the whole of algebra rests on. Division questions always work out exactly, and take-away questions never go below zero.
