Picture Sums
Adding and taking away with pictures: 3 apples + 2 apples, or 5 apples with 2 crossed out.
The first sums a child writes, drawn as pictures. Adding puts two groups of the same picture side by side with a plus between them; taking away shows one group with some pictures crossed out, or leaves the crossing out to the child. Doubles show two equal groups. Pictures sit in rows of five, like a ten-frame, so a group of eight reads as five and three. Choose how far the sums go (up to 5, 10 or 20), whether the child writes only the answer or every number, and add a number line under each sum for the hops. The pictures come from the theme you pick, and the answer key fills in every box.
