Beginning Sounds

Ring the letter a picture starts with, write it in, or hunt a page of pictures for one sound.

Three ways to work on initial sounds from the same set of pictures. Ring the letter gives a choice of two, three or four and is the easiest, because the answer is on the page. Write the letter takes the choice away. Letter hunt turns the page around: one big letter at the top and a sheet of pictures, only some of which begin with it. Pictures are named in the book's language and checked against its phonics rules, so no page ever files chave under C, cebola under C or Stern under S, and the wrong letters offered are always plainly wrong. Choose just these letters to fix the sounds of the week: the hunt then looks for exactly that letter.
