One Sound, Its Spellings

Colour the letters that make a sound, tick whether you hear it, and sort words by how it is spelt.

A sound that cannot be found from the letters alone, with words chosen by hand so that every answer is right. The French set is e that reads [è] (perle, verre, ver: before two consonants or a consonant said at the end) and its other spellings è, ê, ai and ei; the English set is the long ee sound and its spellings ee, ea, y and ie; and there are Portuguese [s] (s, ss, ç, ce, ci), Spanish and Italian [k], German [f] (f, ff, v) and Dutch [ei] (ei, ij). Ring the letters that make the sound; say each word and tick if you hear it (half the words have the same letter saying something else: cheval, melon, bed, hen); or copy each word under its spelling. Pictures are shown where the word names one.
