Words are interlocked into a free-form grid — not the symmetrical newspaper kind, the friendlier sort children's puzzle books use — and numbered in reading order, with the Across and Down clues printed underneath. Every word in the banks carries a clue written for a child, so a crossword is one click away; paste your own list as "word | clue" lines and it uses those instead. If a word arrives without a clue it gets its vowels knocked out and becomes a spelling clue, so a plain spelling list still makes a working puzzle. Turn the word bank on for younger solvers: it lists the answers in a jumble so the puzzle becomes a matching exercise rather than a blank page.
