Syllable Sort
Clap each word, then sort the pictures or words into columns headed 1, 2 and 3 -- or by the letters they have.
A bank of pictures or words across the top and columns underneath. Sorted by claps, the columns are headed by a number of syllables: 1, 2 and 3, or 2, 3 and 4-or-more for Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, where one-syllable words are rare. Sorted by sounds, the columns are headed by spellings you choose -- r and rr, s and ss, ce and ci, ar er ir or ur -- and each word goes under the one it has. With pictures, each one is numbered and the child writes the number into the right column, which keeps the page open to children who cannot yet spell what they can hear; with words, they copy the word itself. Syllables are counted in the book's language, from the picture dictionary and the word banks, never by counting vowels; French counts the syllables a child claps, so pomme is one.
